Adorable and Precocious: Children’s Costumes in the Sadberk Hanım Museum Collection

Mümkün undertook the editorial coordination for the bilingual publications of the children’s costumes exhibition from the Vehbi Koç Foundation Sadberk Hanım Museum Collection.

Held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye, the exhibition underlines the importance given to the child in the family, society and traditions through a collection of children’s clothes from the late Ottoman period to the early years of the Republic.

The main book of the exhibition approaches the child and childhood from different perspectives through articles by Dr. Şebnem Eryavuz, Havva Furat Ay, Makbule Merve Uca and curator Lale Görünür, and discusses the different phases and rituals in which the child is the subject, from birth to education. Both publications reveal the reflection of various aspects of being a child in Ottoman society on material culture and visual media, and the factors shaping children’s clothing.
